How to compare insulation quotes correctly

Insulation quotes vary by R-value achieved, insulation type, and whether air sealing is included. Blown cellulose, fiberglass batts, and spray foam all cost very different amounts and perform differently in different assemblies.

Air sealing is the single highest-ROI line item and is often missing from cheap quotes. A perfectly insulated attic with leaky top plates and can lights will underperform a modestly insulated but well-sealed attic.

Compare R-value (not inches), old insulation removal, vapor barrier, and ventilation work. Ridge vents and soffit baffles are often needed with a top-up and should be priced in.

Most important fields to compare

  • Square footage
  • R-value achieved
  • Type (blown cellulose/fiberglass batts/spray foam)
  • Air sealing included
  • Vapor barrier
  • Ventilation work (baffles, ridge vent)
  • Old insulation removal
  • Permit
  • Warranty length
