How to compare HVAC quotes correctly
HVAC quotes are notoriously hard to compare because contractors rarely quote the same equipment, tonnage, or install scope. A $7,000 quote and a $12,000 quote can be for wildly different systems — different SEER2 ratings, different brands, one with a Manual J load calculation and one without.
The price gap usually comes down to equipment tier (builder-grade vs two-stage vs variable speed), whether ductwork is being inspected or modified, and whether the install includes a new line set, pad, disconnect, and thermostat. A cheap quote with old ductwork and undersized returns will underperform forever.
Focus on total installed cost for an apples-to-apples system, the labor warranty (1 year vs 10 year is a massive difference), and whether the contractor actually measured your home's load instead of just matching the old unit's tonnage.
